2021.10.23 16:01 vertazontal Good whole Bible commentary?
I’m looking for a good whole Bible commentary, preferably with a slower reading plan. I’d love to spend 2-4 years going over the whole Bible with a decent guided chapter by chapter commentary. I’ve done two “Bible in a year” plans (the ESV one and the mcheyne one) and by the end of it I usually feel very scatterbrained and have lost the thread of a single book.
Anybody got good reccos? Doesn’t need to be a study Bible, preferably would just be a chapter by chapter commentary I can read alongside scripture.

2021.10.23 16:01 chacer85 Anyone else having issues with Apple Homekit since iOS 15?
Ever since I upgraded to iOS 15 I have had issues with my hue lights, but the command "hey siri goodnight" still worked and turned off my lights but the automated dimming I had set up to happen at 9pm was not. I have tried searching and cannot find anything that resolves the issue. I resorted to deleting the connection to the bridge inside the Homekit app which deleted all of my lights in the app. I then tried to go through the Hue app and setup the homekit connection again. I have followed the steps in the app, pressed the center circle while its trying to connect and then get the error message "Homekit is unable to connect" I tried unplugging for 10 seconds and trying again to no avail. I tried the resetting homekit option and it is still not work. I am at a loss am would appreciate any suggestions or help resolving this. Usually I am able to eventually figure these things out on my own. I believe I had an issue similar to this a few years ago but I can't remember what I did, I feel like I ended up factory resetting the bridge and reconnecting everything which was a pain.

2021.10.23 16:01 unknowinglyderpy Watching the recent Dune Movie I can clearly see the inspiration for the fundamentals of what was to become CnC (a few spoilers ahead)
I love the movie and I’m looking forward to its sequel. But then I’m also an RTS fan and watching it from that Point of view, I find myself grinning from ear to ear seeing familiar sights that would come to be a staple in many CnC and RTS games that would come after.
From harvesters, silos to what can honestly be considered as an equivalent of targeting an area with a superwapon, heck even a “hunter seeker” drone appears!
I absolutely love this movie and find it a shame that the tie-in game would most likely be an MMO and not an RTS

2021.10.23 16:01 theDharminator Non-meditation, non-doing, non-practice
I'm interested in the dialog I can generate by running my theory through here, what you might say that might improve my thinking on this subject, not so much in being right or convincing you, so your thoughts, criticisms, improvements, and perspectives are welcome. This is not a sermon.
In Zen, we don't do or create anything, no practice, no particular mental state. This seems like an uncontroversial point to me. Joshu said a wooden Buddha doesn't make it through fire, a clay Buddha doesn't make it through water. In Zen, we don't generate or construct anything. We don't do anything, or practice anything, or manufacture any mental state. That's not the Way(TM). (This seems uncontroversial enough that I won't dig up more quotes to support it--Mazu says something like anything gained by practice will be lost, blahblah.)
We have enlightened self-nature. A man of old said "blinking would be too much effort." It seems perhaps so close that the very closeness trips people up in recognition.
So, why read the record? What do we do in or with Zen, if we have no practice, no doctrines, don't create any particular mental state? Why isn't everyone already a Zen master with their enlightened self-nature?
My theory revolves around equilibrium and equanimity, and I conclude that you have to be diligent in "doing" "non-practice." We have (at least) bi-stability in our minds, separate stable modes we can use. (Anger is not a stable mode, but an emotion. Continuous capture by thought is a stable mode, but so is the "opposite", continuous standby with high free energy not captured by thought, an equanimous equilibrium)
Firstly, Zen seems to involve equanimity on average. I liken this to sort of free mental energy, and kind of like Foyan's "director". As you rest in equanimity not captured by conceptual thought, you get better at it, and the pool of equanimity gets larger, but it is a non-doing. When you get captured by conceptual thought, it tends to decrease energy for the pool of equanimity, and decrease the amount of time you spend there, so decreases your skill in "coasting" in it. Hence, you actually need to practice the non-practice. Practicing this non-practice takes less energy, and it's not sophistry to call it a non-practice, because it sustains itself, it is one of at least two stable modes--you don't create it, you just need to know how/where to "find" or "recognize" it and "flip into it".
For me, this creates a sort of theory-of-enlightenment and a link to dualistic mindfulness like so. Mostly, people get easily captured by conceptual thought. Enlightenment happens resting at the equanimity-equilibrium point becomes anti-fragile and the typical default. Where people would get perturbed or captured by conceptual thought, the enlightened person's anti-fragile equanimity recognizes crumbling equanimity, adapts to the circumstances, recognizes the pattern, and gets better at self-sustaining without ever losing it. It becomes anti-fragile. Whereas the average non-enlightened person has truly fragile stability in this state if they can find it at all--they just get knocked out of it and in capture of conceptual thought and forget they just came from the non-captured equilibrium state and are now captured in the other one. The whole process takes less energy, but more "wisdom".
This also creates a link to Pali/Sanskrit canon-esque or more conventional mindfulness and ethics, more conventional Buddhism. Like, you recognize the futility of the usual state, aspire to a better state, maybe sleep regular and abstain from alcohol so that you can easily notice and flip back to the equanimous stable state if you get triggered or flipped over or captured by thought and back in the other one. It creates a bridge between the Unborn (what you don't build or create, hence "Unborn", the equanimous equilibrium)) and the "relative" level of daily life, that which you build or construct or "do". If you murder people all day, it's just going to be really hard to stay in that equanimous equilibrium, there'd be so much screaming, mayhem, and running from the police. It seems to build a pretty complete bridge to the "relative" level of Sanskrit-style "mindfulness" which includes not simply being aware of your senses, but on how your actions feed into your state. (This does, imply, however, that the ultimate Zen master must finally test himself by going on a killing spree and running from the police for the rest of his life in perfect mental equilibrium to ensure his stability is rock solid)
A'ight. That's my theory. I think zen will probably hate the last bit about links to Buddhism type mindfulness, but that's the pay-off, in my opinion--how to relate the abstract, Unborn, unconstructed non-practice to your actual life moment-by-moment, and what practicing the non-practice means.

2021.10.23 16:01 superboreduniverse Tried an intervention w/TBM husband, had him read Steven Hassan chapter ‘How to Undo Mindcontrol’. Three guesses how it went.
He is convinced he is not in a cult. Refused to take break from church influences to critically examine his beliefs. To his credit he was mostly nice about it, but the concept that brainwashed people can’t see that they are brainwashed, hence the need to remove themselves from said influences, went completely over his head, despite his underlying intelligence. Now he is extra cheerful, like he just aced an extra-trying question on the Test of Life and it’s all smooth-sailing into the celestial kingdom from here.
I don’t even know how to respect him right now.
